The 2nd segment of the 20 question interview series is with Rhode Island musician Jon Hope. I have featured him on this very blog numerous times and I am a big fan of his work. I remember hearing about him back in like 2007 or so but I never really paid any attention until 2009. I was a little upset that I waited so long, especially since he’s from my home state. I like what Jon Hope brings because he’s very unique. He’s one of the few musicians who are true to themselves and I know he will never sell out. Jon Hope dropped the critically acclaimed album “Somekind of Wonderful” and I will say that I actually bought this album off his bandcamp site. Yes people, it’s that good. Jon Hope is making some power moves without any management. That is the definition of self-made right there. He dropped the first single, “Rhode Less Traveled” from his upcoming album and he even has a deal with Nike that allows soccer players to use this song in their training videos. He is also having his video for “Rhode Less Traveled” debut on BET’s 106 & Park on Tuesday April 24th. Needless to say this guy is on the come up. But without much further ado, I present you; 20 questions with Jon Hope.
3 reasons that you make music.
To create, inspire, and make money.
What are your top 3 favorite songs by anyone and why?
I really like Calvin Harris' 'Feel So Close' because it's exactly how I want to feel every day. Just a feel good vibe. The chords are crazy. Oncue's 'Runnin' is my shit! Just a well written song. Lastly, I like my sister Nikkiya's unreleased song 'Alright' that you haven't heard yet…her project is going to take her to the next level.
Top 3 Jon Hope songs and why?
I love them all the same seriously. It's choosing my favorite child and I can't do that!
Top 3 favorite foods?
Lasagna, Cashews, and Chicken Parm

What is your favorite pair of shoes?
Some old school New Balance
What is your favorite thing about Rhode Island?
I appreciate the diversity the most and also the easy access. People have no idea how good we got it in terms of travel here in RI. Everything is 20 minutes away tops!
What does Hope symbolize for you?
It means being able to see the unseen. It's a very difficult quality.
If you could collaborate with anyone you want, who would it be and who would produce?
I want to work with Sara Bareilles with production by Pharrell!
What is it like to work with Will Power (supahotbeats)?
Will Power is my friend. Over the past year he really taught me about life and how to approach this music business. He's a true friend and we respect one another. From that respect comes a genuine approach to music. He's the most creative and original producer I know. I'm very fortunate to have met him. He will go down as one of the greats in this music game. What I love about him the most is his open mindedness. He doesn't see genres or categories which is exactly how I am.
Whatever happened to "The Bottle" Remix track ft. Rittz?
Work In Progress. May 9th!!!!!!!!!!
Who can we expect to see on Work In Progress besides Jon Hope?
The features are kept to a minimum. Due to its personal subject matter, it's all me and my thoughts to share. I really feel you will be pleasantly surprised.
What made you decide to give away Work In Progress for free?
At this stage I'm focused on building a strong base. I want a cult and in doing that I want to gain the trust of my fans so they know that Jon Hope puts out quality music.
Why is Barkley better than Jordan?
Man I was so delusional….I don't know what it was, I just connected with Sir Charles growing up.
How did you hook up with Statik Selektah for the Audacity Mixtape?
We linked up via Myspace. I always credit him for showing me the ropes early on in my career. Shout out to the Showoff family.
Can you describe the thought process behind "Rhode Less Traveled"?
I felt like my last two lead singles 'Breathin/Better' are very similar in that they were mid tempo records…so I wanted to make sure I come out the gates for WIP up-tempo and a broader sound. RLT has a worldly sound to it that I was going for. Much respect to Blaze P on the track
Can you explain 101 for those who are unfamiliar?
101 is campaign that my fans came up with that celebrates being true to yourself. It's a mind state. My fans understand my language. I don't care about DJ's or blogs. When I send my music, my fans get it first. 101 is an acronym which means being a 1 of 1.
What can we expect from Jon Hope in the future?
It's all about building and expanding my brand. I'm working on some pretty cool things that my fans will be proud of. Stay tuned.
Anything else you would like to add for the people out there?
My album 'Work In Progress' is going to be something special for anyone who takes the time out of their life to listen. It will impact your life
