Marc Antoni Overnight EP Review

When it comes to listening to music I have a thing for checking out local talent, whether it is in Rhode Island or anywhere else in New England. One day while I was going through twitter I came across this rapper named Marc Antoni. He was formerly known as Fly C. I heard his first release of his Overnight EP which was “Attempts” which featured Laws and Rhode Island’s Theo Martins. I listened to this song and was pleased with all the verses.  This led me to find out more about this Boston emcee. I followed him on twitter and he followed back (something rarely seen among musicians.) He released the Overnight EP with production solely coming from The TrackSlayerz (T.I.’s “I’m Back”) and DJ Pain 1. This will be my first spin of the project, so here it goes! (Oh and I’m listening with my Beats By Dre headphones to get the full effect of the music)

Dear Diary (Intro)
This track starts off by sounding serious. Nice production by The TrackSlayerz and Marc Antoni comes out swinging. This track really sounds like he’s writing in his journal/diary. It’s nice to hear a musician getting personal whether it’s uplifting or dark. Nonetheless Marc Antoni has some heartfelt lyrics and this is a great start to the EP.
8/10

My Ambitions feat. Rain & Rickie Jacobs
Now this DJ Pain 1 beat is smooth and the first guest verse is very solid. The chorus is a nice, smooth sung chorus. Marc Antoni’s second verse was very good also. It’s a short song and I feel like it could use at least another verse, but it’s still a solid song regardless.
7/10

As My Dream Flowers
I tried listening to the whole track before writing this paragraph and I had to pause because Marc Antoni just starting killing it. The punch lines on this TrackSlayerz production are crazy. This beat is very smooth with a sample that I’ve heard before but I can’t quite put my finger on. I’m halfway through this track and it might be my favorite track off the whole EP. This very well may be my summer jam. Word Play, punch lines and a dope beat…Sounds like a great track to me.
10/10

Should’ve Known feat. Jon Hope
This is another TrackSlayerz beat. This Marc Antoni project is really opening my eyes to how dope the TrackSlayerz are. Marc Antoni’s first verse is very good and I really like the hook. Providence’s Jon Hope leaves a gem for the second verse. Marc Antoni’s third verse is full of punch lines and effortless word play which really completes the track. This is also another standout track on the EP.
10/10

Made For Me
This DJ Pain 1 production is pretty dope. I like how Marc Antoni has no problem letting us into his life. I really like the first verse. The chorus puts the whole song together nicely and Marc has some great verses on this track. I definitely need to listen to this track again to feel the full effect of what he’s saying.
8/10

Attempts feat. Theo Martins, Mondo & Laws
Now this is the track that made me notice Marc Antoni. This TrackSlayerz beat is nothing short of spectacular, as is Theo Martins first verse. Mondo has a real nice hook and Laws flow is perfect for this beat. Initially I only listened to this track for Theo Martins’ verse and now I listen to it all the time. This is such a crazy track especially after the beat changes for the third verse just in time for Marc Antoni to shut it down with that last verse.
10/10

Let The Beast Out
This DJ Pain 1 beat is crazy, I’ve always had a thing for the “epic” sounding beats. Marc Antoni starts out just spitting some crazy bars. I really can’t get over how dope this beat is and Marc’s flow is unparalleled. All I can say about this track is that Marc Antoni really does let the beast out. Oh and that missionary line is crazy.
8/10

Now while “Let The Beast Out” clocks in at about 4 minutes or so, there is still like 5 minutes left of the track. That means there is a hidden bonus track (YES!!!) I have no idea what this bonus track is called but the beat is a banger. Marc Antoni has some hard hitting bars in this track. There is an I-20 feature which is surprising due to the fact that I haven’t heard from I-20 in a long time. Regardless I-20 has a very solid verse and Marc Antoni’s hook is good.
7/10

After listening to the whole Overnight EP I am very impressed. Marc Antoni has some substance in his music and it makes it very easy for me to listen to. It’s not like he just plugs punch lines into his verses. Each line is carefully crafted. I didn’t really hear many filler lines and that is a good thing. After my first listen I can say that there are definitely some tracks that will get regular play on my iTunes and in my car. My favorite tracks are As My Dream Flowers, Should’ve Known and Attempts. Now while those are my favorite tracks, that doesn’t mean that the other tracks are lacking. Every track on this EP is solid and that’s how an ideal EP should be. I tip my cap to Marc Antoni for a tremendous release and Boston may have a future star on their hands!

Overnight EP grade: 8/10
